As expected, nobody could agree.

Theodore Hawthorne IV

The answer is, quite obviously, the Martini.

The Martini represents the highest expression of cocktail craftsmanship. There is nowhere to hide. No excessive ingredients. No distractions. Every element matters.

A proper Martini rewards precision, discipline, and restraint.

Hundreds of cocktails have come and gone.

The Martini remains.

That fact alone should settle the matter.

Vivian "Three Olives" Sinclair

Theodore always answers questions as though he's being graded.

The correct answer is the Manhattan.

A Manhattan is elegant without being intimidating. Sophisticated without being pretentious. It works at dinner parties, cocktail hours, celebrations, and quiet evenings at home.

The Martini requires commitment.

The Manhattan simply makes everyone happier.

Which, unlike Theodore, I consider important.

Seamus O'Callaghan

You're both wrong.

The perfect cocktail is the Old Fashioned.

A drink survives for over two hundred years because it works.

Three ingredients. Simple. Balanced. Reliable.

No smoke. No foam. No edible glitter. No nonsense.

Make the drink. Drink the drink. Move on with your life.

Dr. Percival Rumwell

An endlessly fascinating question.

The difficulty lies in the word "perfect."

Perfection depends entirely upon one's destination.

A Martini impresses. A Manhattan comforts. An Old Fashioned reassures. A Mai Tai transports.

For this reason, I nominate the Mai Tai.

The highest purpose of a cocktail is not refreshment. It is transformation.

The Mai Tai, properly prepared, remains one of the most elegant examples of hospitality ever placed into a glass.

The story, as it often does, proves more interesting than the recipe.

Tommy "Two Coolers" Sullivan

Buddy.

We've lost the plot.

You people are acting like somebody asked us to solve world hunger.

The perfect cocktail is the one you enjoy. That's it. End of article.

You know what's funny? Theodore wants a Martini. Vivian wants a Manhattan. Seamus wants an Old Fashioned. Rumwell wants to drink on an island that may or may not exist.

Meanwhile I'm sitting here with a whiskey and Coke watching the Patriots and having a terrific day.

The answer is whiskey and Coke.

And if you disagree, congratulations. You just volunteered to buy the next round.

That's called veteran leadership.

Final Verdict

After considerable discussion, several disagreements, and one entirely unnecessary argument regarding the historical significance of garnish placement, the panel reached no consensus whatsoever.

Theodore voted for the Martini. Vivian voted for the Manhattan. Seamus voted for the Old Fashioned. Rumwell voted for the Mai Tai. Tommy voted for whatever was closest to the cooler.

Perhaps that is the lesson. The perfect cocktail depends on what you value.

Craftsmanship. Hospitality. Tradition. Adventure. Or simply having a good time.
